Inexpensive things to do during the Winter Break, etc.

Cheap things to do over Christmas Break (not in any particular order): 

Security precautions with many things in life (such as travelling on the metro, international travel, hiking, biking, going to downtown LA, etc.) : There's security in numbers.  Go in groups and look out for each other.

  • Park at La Tuna Canyon, take sandwiches, water and flashlights, hike up to the top of the mountain (about 1 hour 15 minutes, and watch the sunset and the city lights! Take small backpacks with jackets, water, gloves, flashlights. (take 210 West, exit La Tuna Canyon, turn left, go under freeway and park on the left near the gate that leads up the moutain.  Walk up the paved road then turn Right up to the top.  About 3.3 miles).   
  • Cherry Canyon or the San Rafaels (hiking, mtn. biking)
  • Play miniature golf
  • Tennis=FREEat Montrose park, dunsmore park, etc.
  • Go to Chinatown for lunch/dinner;  Take the metro from Pasadena.
  • Venice Beach; walk around.
  • Park in Pasadena, take the metro to union station, walk across the street to Olvera street during Las Posadas
  • Eat dinner, watch kids break the piñata.
  • Go have dinner at City Walk.
  • Drive along Christmas tree lane and the Balian mansion in Pasadena (off Allen St).
  • Bonfire at Huntington beach.  Bring jackets, hats, gloves.  Buy sandwiches.
  • Go Hiking.  Waterfall at Eaton Canyon in Pasadena, Great city views along the Sam Merill Trail (top of Lake Avenue in Pasadena, Griffith park observatory, or the Old Bat Cave from the Batman TV series (10 minute walk with great views of the Hollywood Sign), 
  • Deukmejian Park at Sunset (brings sandwiches, take a short hike or just go to the park area and bring a blanket.
  • Go biking,walking along the beach (santa monica pier).
  • Eat dinner in Old Town.  Then walk around the fountains by California Pizza Kitchen (Los Robles) and the lit up City Hall.  Walk over to Paseo and see the lights/fountains as well.
  • Go Ice Skating in Pasadena or the PickWick.  Downtown LA outdoors:  Pershing Square until January 19th,  or at LA Live.
  • Go Bowling with a group of friends, Jewel City, on Glendale Blvd.
  • Americana ride the trolley, see the fountain show and the tallest Christmas tree in the world (Rockefeller centers tree = 70 ft, American = 110 ft approx.)
  • Get Artistic with your cameras.
  • Hike to the Hollywood Sign in Griffith Park (or, again, go to the Bat Cave where they filmed the original Batman TV series)
  • DWP Park at the zoo and walk to see the lights. Or drive it!  Dec. 4th Dec 30th.
  • Getty Museum, Norton Simon, LACMA or other museums, MOCA is free on Tuesdays.
  • Ahmanson theater or Music center (1 hour before, tickets are sold for approx. $15-20.
  • Go to the movies!
  • Rose parade on December 31st (marshmallow and tortilla fights).
  • Farmers markets, the Grove, The Huntington Gardens, Descanso Gardens, Fashion Island
