Weekly Falcon Flyer

Message from the Principal

Welcome to February!
As we settle into the rhythm of the spring semester, we have the distinct privilege of celebrating Black History Month. This is a time for our community to recognize, honor, and learn from the profound contributions, resilience, and achievements of Black Americans throughout our nation’s history.
Celebrating Black History Month Black History Month is more than just a look into the past; it is an acknowledgment that Black history is American history. From the arts and sciences to politics and literature, the impact of Black leaders and innovators has shaped the world we live in today. As we move through this month, let us remember the words of the poet Amanda Gorman:
“For there is always light, if only we're brave enough to see it. If only we're brave enough to be it.”
We encourage all Falcons to take time this month to be curious. Read a book by a Black author, research an inventor you haven’t heard of, or engage in conversations about how diversity strengthens our Crescenta Valley community. Let us be inspired by the trailblazers who overcame adversity to create a better future for us all.

Staying Motivated: The Semester Sprint
With the excitement of the "new year" wearing off, February can sometimes feel like a hurdle. It is natural for energy levels to dip, but this is exactly the time to dig deep and find your rhythm.
Here are three ways to keep your Falcon Pride and motivation high this semester:
1. "Reset" Your Goals If your New Year's resolutions have already faded, that’s okay! Treat the start of this month as a fresh start. Set one or two small, manageable academic goals for the next four weeks. Small wins lead to big momentum.
2. Focus on "Not Yet" Struggling with a difficult subject like Math or a World Language? Adopt a "Growth Mindset." Instead of saying, "I don't understand this," try saying, "I don't understand this yet." Remember that checking for understanding—asking questions and seeking help from teachers—is a sign of strength, not weakness.
3. Prioritize Balance CVHS is known for academic rigor, but you cannot pour from an empty cup. Make sure you are prioritizing sleep, putting the phone away an hour before bed, and finding small moments of joy outside of homework. A well-rested brain is a powerful brain.
Remember: Success is a marathon, not a sprint. Lean on your teachers, your counselors, and your community. We are all here to help you fly.
Let’s make it a fantastic February, Falcons!

Coalition of Student Clubs Plan Demonstration

We have been informed that nine of our student clubs are planning a walkout this Thursday in protest of recent ICE activity. Additionally, student organizers plan to host an informational table during lunch to discuss student rights.

In Glendale Unified, we encourage students to be engaged, civic-minded participants in our community. We respect our students' rights to express their opinions and take stands on important issues, provided that such expression does not disrupt the educational process or harm others. We expect all students to remain courteous and respectful of differing opinions.
While we strongly encourage students to remain in class to engage in learning, we understand that some may choose to participate. Our priority remains maintaining a safe space for all students and staff.

Attendance Policy (California Ed Code) Please be aware of the attendance protocols regarding civic participation:
  • Excused Absence: Under CA Education Code 48205, high school students are permitted one excused absence per school year for a civic or political event, provided they give prior notification to the school office.
  • Unexcused Absence: Students who miss class without providing prior notification will receive an unexcused absence.
Safety Expectations Any campus disturbances that threaten the safety of students or staff will be subject to disciplinary action in accordance with Board Policy (BP 5131.4).

We encourage you to discuss your expectations regarding this situation with your student.

National School Counselors Week

This week, Crescenta Valley High School is proud to participate in National School Counseling Week, a time to focus public attention on the unique contribution of school counselors within U.S. school systems.

At CVHS, we know that our counselors are much more than just schedulers. They are the first line of defense for student mental health, the architects of four-year academic plans, the navigators of the complex college admissions process, and the trusted adults our students turn to in times of crisis.

To our amazing counseling team: Thank you.
Thank you for the late nights spent writing letters of recommendation. Thank you for the empathy you show when a student is having a tough day. Thank you for helping our Falcons find their wings and their direction.

We are incredibly lucky to have such a dedicated, compassionate, and skilled team supporting the academic and social-emotional growth of our student body.

Falcons: If you see your counselor this week, please give them a high-five or a simple "thank you."

UPDATE: Community Service Hours

Unfortunately, the way community service hours were submitted and tracked in the past has encountered a technical issue, and the data that was collected cannot be retrieved. We understand this is frustrating and concerning for students and families who relied on that system.

To help remedy the situation, from January 2026 through the end of the school year in June 2026, we will be using a paper-based process so students can re-report the hours they have completed and any additional hours earned this year. Paper forms will be available in the library and on the school website. Please use this LINK to print forms at home.

Please note:

  • Hours completed before January 2026 do NOT require a supervisor’s signature.
  • Hours completed during and after January 2026 WILL require a supervisor’s signature.
  • All completed forms should be turned in to Mrs. Gay in the library. We strongly encourage students to take a photo of the completed form for their own records.

We are actively working on a new and improved digital system for tracking community service hours and will share details with the school community once it is ready to launch.

If you have any questions, please contact Mrs. Gay at rgay@gusd.net or Ms. Papazyan at npapazyan@gusd.net.
