11th and 12th Grade Students:

AP African American Studies is an engaging and powerful course that explores the triumphs, struggles, creativity, and resilience of African Americans throughout history. Students examine the richness of ancient African civilizations, the horrific realities and lasting impact of African enslavement, and the courageous fight for freedom, equality, and justice that followed. From the Harlem Renaissance and the Civil Rights Movement to modern music, art, literature, and social movements, the course highlights how African American experiences have profoundly shaped the United States and the world.

Through thought-provoking discussions, documentaries, creative activities, and connections to current events, students develop a deeper understanding of history and culture while sharpening their critical thinking skills. The course also features an independent research project in which students investigate a topic of personal interest and present their findings, allowing them to explore history in a meaningful, hands-on way.  This course is open to 11th- and 12th-grade students, as it builds on the history and literature covered in 11th-grade courses. Students interested in joining this exciting course are encouraged to speak with their counselor about adding AP African American Studies to their schedule!
